João Mário, the Portugal international who was one of the stars of the Benfica team last season, has been ruled out for two weeks with knee surgery.
The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for the rest of the season and may prevent him from playing in the UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United on April 24th.
Mário had been on the sidelines since the match against Real Madrid on January 16th due to a knee ligament injury he sustained during the game. He had been given a cortisone injection to help heal his injured knee but it did not work.
After undergoing further tests, doctors have concluded that Mário's knee needs more serious surgery and will require a hip replacement.
Despite the setback, Mário remains confident that he can return to full fitness and could still play in the league this season.
It is hoped that Mário's recovery will be swift enough to allow him to return to action before the start of the new season. The club has already begun planning for his return, with plans to retrain him as a midfielder or as a forward.
Mário has always been a talented player who has been known for his goal-scoring ability. His injury means that he may never feature again in the Portuguese national team,Premier League Frontline which he helped to win two silverware titles in his career.
Injuries can be tough to overcome, especially when they occur while you're still playing. But if Mário can recover quickly, there's no reason why he shouldn't continue to play in the top flight of European football. It's just going to take some time, though, and we'll all wait and see how things develop over the coming months.
